This project was inspired by Parisian architecture, specifically the patterns, textures and colours that I experienced whilst visiting the city. I was inspired by the structural exterior details of buildings and how this can be translated into a weaving pattern. I have always had an interest in the different architectural elements, from how the face of a building naturally draws your eyes towards the columns or height of the building. From this I see the similarities between the exterior of a building with the warp and how the small details can relate to the weft. Building upon knowledge that I have gained from the second year of my degree and my placement, I was able to push my technical skills by exploring the possibilities of warp and weft floats to create unique wall hangings for interior spaces. Due to the pandemic I have had the time to develop more ambitious ideas from the woven samples I was able to complete beforehand. It is important to me that woven pieces are made from biodegradable materials so as not to contribute to the growing waste problem with many materials unable to break down and decompose. Therefore, every woven artwork I have created is purely made from cotton.
